Beta Pic b the transiting planet of November 1981 ?

چکیده
In 1981, β Pictoris showed strong and rapid photometric variations that were attributed to the transit of a giant comet or a planet orbiting at several AUs. Recently, a candidate planet has been identified by imagery in the circumstellar disk of β Pictoris. This planet, named β Pic b, is observed at a projected distance of 8 AU from the central star. It is therefore a plausible candidate for the photometric event observed in 1981. The coincidence of the observed position of the planet in November 2003 and the calculated position assuming that the 1981 transit is due to a planet orbiting at 8 AU is intriguing. Assuming that the planet that is detected on the image is the same as the object transiting in November 1981, we estimate ranges of possible orbital distances and periods. In the favored scenario, the planet orbits at ∼8 AU and was seen close to its quadrature position in the 2003 images. In this case, most of the uncertainties are related to error bars on the position in 2003. Uncertainties related to the stellar mass and orbital eccentricity are also discussed. We find a semi-major axis in the range [7.6-8.7] AU and an orbital period in the range [15.9-19.5] years. We give predictions for imaging observations at quadrature in the southwest branch of the disk in future years (2011-2015). We also estimate possible dates for the next transits and anti-transits.

Search for a habitable terrestrial planet transiting the nearby red dwarf GJ 1214⋆
High-precision eclipse spectrophotometry of transiting terrestrial exoplanets represents a promising path for the first atmospheric characterizations of habitable worlds and the search for life outside our solar system. The detection of terrestrial planets transiting nearby late-type M-dwarfs could make this approach applicable within the next decade, with soon-to-come general facilities. In th...

Ribas and collaborators have recently proposed that an additional, ∼ 5 M ⊕ planet orbits the transiting planet host star GJ 436. Long-term dynamical interactions between the two planets leading to eccentricity excitation might provide an explanation for the transiting planet's unexpectedly large orbital eccentricity. In this paper we examine whether the existence of such a second planet is supp...

متن کاملConstraining the Rotation Rate of Transiting Extrasolar Planets by Oblateness Measurements
The solar system gas giant planets are oblate due to their rapid rotation. A measurement of the planet’s projected oblateness would constrain the planet’s rotational period. Planets that are synchronously rotating with their orbital revolution will be rotating too slowly to be significantly oblate; these include planets with orbital semi-major axes ∼< 0.2 AU (for MP ∼ MJ and M∗ ∼ M ). Jupiter-l...
متن کاملGravitational microlensing of stars with transiting planets
If planetary systems are ubiquitous then a fraction of stars should possess a transiting planet when being microlensed. This paper presents a study of the influence of such planets on microlensing light curves. For the giant planets recently identified, the deviations in the light curve can be substantial, although the specifics of the perturbations are dependent upon the radius of the planet r...
